"Materials List"

   Hi Guys,
I have been sitting on plans #039 for a couple of years now and figure it's time to get started. I was wondering if anybody has assembled a raw materials list(s) for the classic yet. I have also been investigating plywood water jet cut ribs as an alternative to built up ribs. From what I have discovered so far, it looks very promising.

   Kevin,

I'm building Classic #86. I spent a few evenings calculating the 4130 materials from the plans and below is what I came up with. I'm mostly done with the fuselage welding and my materials list is holding up fine. Despite this, I'm sure I'm missing something so use with caution.

The below list was sent to Charlie at "The Dillsburg Aeroplane Works" and he filled the order for $1691.61 plus $146.58 freight from PA to TX. The streamline tubing is pricy!!

If anyone has a materials list for the wings, I'd like to get a copy.

Just as an update or FYI; I can get 40 ribs and cap stips cut from 1/8" & 1/4" plywood with water jet in 1 day for $285.00. This is at a local machine shop that has CNC water jet capability. I provided the CAD drawing for the Clark Y by e-mail and they were able to transfer it to the CNC. Ain't technology great!

I am just trying to get started on a Hatz, Still having a hard time getting hold of Jeff to order a set, but anyway...I am real interested in cutting the ribs, I have a friend here in town that can cut from a cad file. Did you modify the design? Or just cut the outline with rounded corners? Is there anyweay I could get a copy of the Autocad file E-mailed??
Thanks for any info!!

Hi Kevin,

I just saw your post and had a couple of questions if you don't mind. The $285 you quote is for labor only or does that include the plywood too? Even if it doesn't include the plywood it sure would save a lot of labor. Do you plan on having your ribs cut there as I would be interested in the details the shop needs to set up an order when my time comes to make ribs?

   Kevin,

Just saw your post. The price you quoted is for labor only correct? I would have to have aircraft grade plywood shipped to the shop? Also are you planning on having your ribs water cut? If so, would you please post additional details of how to go about setting up the job with the shop and your satisfaction with the finished product? Thanks. It sure would save a lot of labor having them cut this way.

   John,
You are correct. That price was only for cutting. You would have to supply the materials. As far as set up, All I can tell you right now is I called the shop and told them what I wanted. I sent them the CAD drawings by email and they quoted that price to me. They told me you would get a sharper edge and a tolerance of .010-.015 with the water jet cutting method.

Even at that price a good deal of labor is saved. As I was looking over the Classic plans it appears there are different ribs, that is they are not carbon copies of each other. I was wondering if that was taken into consideration for the water jet quote?

the price quoted to me was for 40 full size ribs. I did tell them I would need modifications done to some of the ribs. I was told that would only mean a few stokes of the keypad to make minor changes and would not increase the cost by any appreciable amount. Now here's the kicker; I just purchased a project and the ribs are built!
