What a nice old Hatz Biplane! It looks like a solid, well-built biplane that John Hatz would be quite proud of. Can you email I couple of pictures including the instrument panel and provide some history? Would love to use the information in the next Hatz newsletter. Have fun flying your Hatz.

You're faster than me (O320E2D also) but I'm running a homemade prop and Cub type cowl. I cruise about 88kts at 2300. Hope you get some good weather to enjoy it!

Thanks. 1024# Empty. No radios. Pretty basic instruments. Using 2200 rpm several four direction runs using the gps are showing 93 knots. Really happy with that! Pretty amazing plane to build from plans when you factor in the builder was still in high school when he bought the plans and started building it. Took him six years. His family had their own runway on their orchard and had a Champ, then Citabria and a Cub. You are right that there had to be so few of them flying then to undertake that kind of project really amazes me. He did a great job welding, fabric and paint. Said he flew it to Oshkosh in 1982.

What a neat Hatz. I don't know how many CB-1's were flying in 1982 (FAA date of manu) but it's got to be in the first dozen or so. What does she weigh?

It has a Lycoming 0320E2D 150 hp. I don’t have experience to compare it to other Hatz’s but my limited experience so far is I would not any less, but no more either. But maybe a little less and I could not even tell the difference?

40° is my limit, too, and that's a very short flight.

I have resurrected number 57 after sitting in a hanger for almost 25 years. Bought it from the original owner/builder. It had 156 hours on it total. While not its first flight, it was my first flight flight in it. Was able to fly it about 8 hours and give six rides in it before the cold Michigan weather hit. Did fly it a week ago in 39 degree temps but that might be my limit. It flies fantastic and is awesomely fun!
