2011 Biplane Fly-ins

Post by rawheels »

So, what is the deal with there being two biplane fly-ins the first weekend of June?

The one in Illinois is closer to me, but judging based on the websites and the videos on youtube (or lack there of), it seems like the "also ran" in this competition. Did anyone attend either event last year?

I talked to Eric Dienst (see Art Chester "Jeep" replica) about the Biplane fly-in at DeKalb in early June, 2011. He said it was "better than last year" so I think it's picking up. We'll see.

I attended the DeKalb fly in and was disappointed.
We arrived Friday around noon and were greeted by three gentlemen who flew in from Indiana/Ohio Boy were they glad to see us! They said they were seriously considering leaving... they were the only ones there for two and a half days. Our three planes doubled the size of the campgrounds.
This year's fly in coincided with the local IAC Chapter's competition weekend so the weekend was geared toward them. There didn't seem to be any organized "Biplane" activities; although, the IAC didn't mind us tagging along with their activities.
DeKalb is a nice facility and we had the opportunity to look through hangers, travel to town to eat and generally bum around the airport and do what we wanted. There were a few planes fly in on Saturday to scope out what was happening but didn't stay more than a few hours before moving on.
Not sure I'll go back.
