Dale Severs is no newcomer to homebuilding, having already completed and flown a
VW-powered Sonerai. He and Rick Hansen (EAA Grand Champion, Oshkosh, 1986) had a
bit of a friendly rivalry going while they raced to completion. With only a handful
of weeks to go before Oshkosh, they both finished, flew up to Oshkosh, and both won
Champion Lindy trophies! Dale's, in particular, was a crowd favorite.
Dale is a fellow member of EAA Chapter 414. He and Rick have been an immense help to
me on my Hatz, passing along tips, techniques, and the occasional jig. They even did
a presentation at a Chapter meeting once, dragging a bare fuselage and wing section
into the meeting room! Great guys!
Most of these photos are ones that have been on this page for a while. They are
in-process photos of Dale rushing to complete the aircraft in time for Oshkosh.
The newest photos will be placed toward the bottom of this page.

Dale Severs
(left) and a friend pose with the Hatz. |
|
Full view of
Dale with his Hatz. Forward fuselage panels are in the forground.
Dale still hasn't set that can down - drink up, buddy! |
 |
A closeup of
the forward quarter of the fuselage looking aft. That paint can't
shine any brighter than that! Those are cherrywood floor panels.
Not shown are the details of the gear spring assembly. On Dale's
Hatz, the springs can be disassembled if needed (not so on the
plans). He can also adjust camber. |
 |
A pretty engine
always draws a crowd. |
 |
The same view,
as above, of the Hatz, sans Dale. |
 |
Hatz stuff.
Yep, those are two sets of completed wings and centersections
on the rack! A sign that Rick Hansen has been lurking about this
place too! |
|
Cowls, cowls,
everywhere! From the back left, clockwise: Rear cockpit, foward
cockpit, engine-lower, engine-upper.
Those are
Rick Hansen's cabanes in the background. |
|
Another look
at the fuselage. Wings and center section are on the rack in
the background. |
|
A look down
the inside of the fuselage. This picture was completely dark,
so I tried to digitally enhance it a bit. Still didn't help much,
but the lawn chair came out nice! |
|
Dale's pristine
Continental O-200 engine getting ready for final assembly in
the Hatz. Dale is a firm believer in building light and using
an O-200. |
|
Another view
of the O-200. Aftermarket starter spins faster and is lighter.
Yep, that's Dale trying to shave a pound or two off the net weight! |
|
Stack'o'Wings!
Dale's set is the upper cream-color. The lower set belongs to
Rick Hansen. |
|
Another view
just to annoy those of us who are still building ribs. Notice
how the wingtip bows continue into the ailerons. |

Dale and
New Vintage on the ramp at Wausau Airport for breakfast
during the Hatz Homecoming at Merrill, WI., July, 1998, just
before Oshkosh. |
|
A computer enhancement
of the picture above that I did as a gag for Dale. He wondered
whether it would be cool to have models pose with the Hatz. It
works for me! |
