Dale Severs is no newcomer to homebuilding, having already completed and flown a VW-powered Sonerai. He and Rick Hansen (EAA Grand Champion, Oshkosh, 1986) had a bit of a friendly rivalry going while they raced to completion. With only a handful of weeks to go before Oshkosh, they both finished, flew up to Oshkosh, and both won Champion Lindy trophies! Dale’s, in particular, was a crowd favorite.
Dale is a fellow member of EAA Chapter 414. He and Rick have been an immense help to me on my Hatz, passing along tips, techniques, and the occasional jig. They even did a presentation at a Chapter meeting once, dragging a bare fuselage and wing section into the meeting room! Great guys!
Most of these photos are ones that have been on this page for a while. They are in-process photos of Dale rushing to complete the aircraft in time for Oshkosh. The newest photos will be placed toward the bottom of this page.

Rick Hansen’s Tizzy Too is in the background.

Getting ready for Oshkosh! Final assembly.

Cutting capstrips for Dad. Absolute concentration is required for this job.
Also, no loose clothing.

Notice how while everyone else is watching something to the right, these Hatz Nutz are in a huddle. It’s all in how you set your priorities.

A beautiful shot of Concord through the wings of the Hatz.
To the dismay of the Concord crew, Dale wouldn’t let them park next to New Vintage.

Detail of the front hole. The embroidered glovebox cover caught the judges eye.

A Rolls-Royce O-200, built under license of Continental. Same engine, spiffier rocker boxes.

No, it's not documented evidence of child labor in the garment industry. It's the New Vintage Crew hard at work sewing the covering.
Where the heck is Dad while all this work is going on?

NOTE: he lightened the seat considerably on the final aircraft.

The women in Dale's life at the end of a successful coup. Wife and daughter displace Dale from the cockpit of the Hatz.

The New Vintage Crew displays the spinner-thingy ornament that will adorn the nose of the Hatz.

Dale’s daughter clamps down on unruly capstrip and gussets

The strains of the flightline take their toll.

What attention to detail! 😉
